Listening is much more than hearing. Hearing happens automatically whenever sound reaches your ears, but listening means paying attention to that sound and working out what it means. When you listen in English, your brain picks out individual words, notices the rhythm and melody of each sentence, and connects what you hear to what you already know, all within a few seconds.

Good listening skills help you understand conversations, follow lessons, enjoy movies and songs, and respond naturally to other people. Like any skill, listening grows stronger with regular practice. Start with short, slow recordings, replay them as many times as you need, and move up a level when you feel comfortable. Choose your level below, or watch our free listening videos on YouTube.
